COLD WAR POLO: RECAP by fixiegc

The first few moments of the game.

Everyone played good hard polo.

It was a perfect day for a showdown East vs West the superpowers of the past could finally face off again to finish off what had started 40 odd years ago. The cold war got hot again as the two teams duked it out for superiority. At around 3 o’clock we erected the great wall of construction cones and mesh to divide the Musgrave Park polo courts into red and blue. Each team had around 15 to 17 players ranging from well experienced to new to the sport. The format of polo was a bench minor three players from each team on the court at one time with unlimited substitutions with four quarters at 15 minutes each. Ali and Myself had been elected team captains/manager, we pretty much had to keep on top of the interchange giving everyone a go.

This format of game got everyone involved to the point where a few heated arguments broke out over some of the rules. The red team took out the first quarter convincingly; did I mention the scores are reset at each quarter? So with the scores reset the blue team raised the bar and then had a bitch and moan about the interchange rule. The red team battled on regardless of the bitching and moaning. The blue team took out the next two quarters in rather convincing style. The scene was set it was late afternoon the capitalist pigs were up and the red team had to win the last quarter to level the match. At first it was looking all the blue teams way it wasn’t until the last 5 minutes that the red team rose to the occasion. The red team brought it home hard with a few close calls levelling the match two all. Both team captains met in the middle to discuss what to do next, we both agreed to leave it at tie everyone was rather happy with that. Regardless of the result the biggest winner of the day was polo everyone got involved and everyone got to play polo! A great day in all. Thanks to Ollie for organising it and everyone who played and spectated.

So after all the hype and the so called resolution to a 40 year battle it was still a tie!

Come at me bro!

happy days
